Takashi Murakami, born in 1963 in Tokyo, also trained at the National University of Fine Arts and Music, where he obtained a doctorate in 'Nihonga', a style that combines elements of both Western and Eastern art from the nineteenth century. Murakami works in a wide range of media, from traditional painting to new digital and commercial forms. He is widely recognized as one of the most innovative and influential Japanese artists of our time.
With his work, Murakami tries to blur the boundaries between high and low art. He is known as one of the founders of the Superflat style, which is characterized by large, flat areas of color and characters inspired by anime and manga. His work has parallels with pop art, because he integrates elements from popular culture into visual art.
His oeuvre is therefore often considered part of Neo Pop art. Murakami creates a variety of works, from cartoonish paintings and minimalist sculptures to large inflatable objects and sets. Many of his designs are inspired by his famous character Mr. Dob.
Murakami's work is exhibited in prestigious museums worldwide. In 2008, he was the only visual artist on Time magazine's list of the 100 Most Influential People.
