During a trip across the Siribuat archipelago, located in the South China Sea, Tom Smetsers photographed huge shells. With this he lays down the basis of his organic primal forms, translated by himself as "Shells of molluscs".
The objects of Tom Smetsers are hand-made and unique in piece. Using the fusing techniques, in which melting temperatures are raised to 860 degrees. Each object shows different shape, creating its own character and a unique custom art object.
In principle, inspired by exotic shells, Tom Smetsers has developed his special design language in recent years. The young ambitious Smetsers is experimenting with different materials such as copper, Corten steel and clear glass. Recently he published his first book "Made by instinct". Tom Smetsers' sculptures are on permanent display at AbrahamArt, the largest gallery and art library in the Netherlands.
