Each work consists of several layers of texture-bearing paint, wall paint and acrylic paint. Although the lines of the editions are the same, each individual work has significant differences due to the variety of techniques such as painting, burning, staining and smearing.
In his figurative work, Christiaan Lieverse plays with the beauty and tenderness of his models, powerfully portraying their vulnerability in an inimitable way. His canvases reflect various emotions and due to the pure and contemporary approach the work remains exciting because of the unique, but also changeable interpretation of the viewer.
Christiaan Lieverse (1971) gained international recognition in 2005 and is known for his powerful, contemporary body of work that blends abstraction, figuration, and experimentation. A recurring theme in his work is identity in a globalizing world. His figures often gaze beyond the canvas, like a film still filled with tension, emotion, and suggestion. Lieverse captures deeply recognizable feelings in a pure, direct way while leaving room for the viewer’s own interpretation.
Since 2008, with Atelier Lieverse, he has created exclusive, handcrafted editions of selected originals. Thanks to his unique, self-developed technique using layers of paint, rough materials, relief, palette knife, and refined brushstrokes, these works are not reproductions but independent, one-of-a-kind artworks. Atelier Lieverse is represented by renowned galleries and presented internationally at major art fairs.
