The eagles are taught to hunt rabbits, foxes and even small wolves and are kept in captivity for about ten years. After this, they are released back into the wild, so that they may breed. In the past, it was almost exclusively men who became eagle hunters, known locally as baytolda or berkutchi.

However, in recent years more and more women have begun taking up the tradition.

Since his first internationally acclaimed exploration of Tibet nearly 30 years ago, Jimmy Nelson (born in Kent, England, 1967) has traveled to the world's most hidden corners to photograph indigenous peoples. In 2013 he published his first book "Before They Pass Away", making his lifelong dream of creating awareness about the unimaginable diversity of the world a reality.
